Cambodia and the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste Pledge to Promote Bilateral Cooperation in the Tourism Sector
On the occasion of the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2026, H.E. Huot Hak, Minister of Tourism of the Kingdom of Cambodia, held a bilateral meeting with H.E. Filipus Nino Pereira, Minister of Commerce and Industry of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste. At the outset, H.E. the Minister of Tourism congratulated the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste on becoming the 11th member of ASEAN and highly commended the strong and effective cooperation between the two countries at all levels and across all sectors, particularly at the highest leadership level. In response, H.E. Minister Filipus Nino Pereira took this opportunity to express his profound gratitude and respect to Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, former Prime Minister and current President of the Senate of the Kingdom of Cambodia, and to Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, for their consistent support for Timor-Leste’s ASEAN membership and for playing a crucial role in facilitating Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN. Notably, following its official admission as an ASEAN member, this marked the first time that Timor-Leste participated in the 29th ASEAN Tourism Ministers Meeting as a full member.
At the same time, both sides welcomed the strengthening of tourism cooperation between the two countries through the acceleration of procedures for signing a Memorandum of Understanding in the near future, following its postponement in 2017. H.E. Minister Filipus Nino Pereira will inform H.E. Francisco Kalbuadi Lay, Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, and Minister of Tourism and Environment of Timor-Leste, to review and expedite the remaining procedures.
